When two teens, abandoned by their girlfriends for the summer, convince an older woman to join them on a quest for a hidden beach, the trip turns into a referendum on their friendship, sexuality, and what they want out of life. While it flares up before fizzling out in its final moments, the view is admittedly entertaining and worth witnessing if only to relish in the thrill of its visual excess. Swimming Pool was released theatrically in France uncut with a U rating, meaning suitable for all ages. While it lacks classics like Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain) and Contempt (Le Mépris), you’re bound to find a movie that captures the heart and soul of France. While categorized as a comedy, the film is a much more somber look at the price of fame and success.
The inattentive and unimaginative need not apply. And Netflix’s offering of French films has continued to shrink.
